Who
is the money going to? This effort is
being coordinated in partnership with the The
American Red Cross. They are in full support of this effort,
and are excited about the potential of this nationwide
collaboration. The American Red Cross is providing lifesaving assistance in the
form of immediate disaster mass care and blood to victims and
emergency workers in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania
following the incomprehensible attacks of September 11. The Red
Cross will stay with these people as this tragedy unfolds. The Red
Cross has been on the scene from the beginning providing disaster
support in the form of food, shelter and mental health counseling
to all individuals affected. The American
Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund
supports the victims of these and other disasters.

Why
are there "prizes" for those who
raise the most money?
The reason behind this national fundraising drive is to raise
support for this tragedy. The "prizes" are simply to
recognize the top three fundraising efforts of participating halls
or RAs and hopefully to get more people involved. They are not
meant to bring a spirit of competition, but one of encouragement
and collaboration. By collaborating with other residence halls
around the country, the potential to generate support is
tremendous!
It
is up to you whether you compete between halls on your campus or
between floors in your building. Working together as a hall might
be the most effective. The top three contributions nationwide
will receive the $100 pizza gift certificates. It will be up to
those who submit them to decide how that is arranged, whether it
be a contribution by a hall, an RA, or a hall government, etc. The
point is to raise a lot of money for this cause, so I please don't
get too caught up in the "contest" aspect of this drive.

How
do I coordinate the collection of money?
You can use any number of methods. Work within your hall to decide
what will be the most effective. You might have a contest between
floors, or you might want to collaborate as a hall. Some people
may use a collection jar at the front desk, or go door to door in
the hall. If you have a competition among floors, avoid using the
term "penny wars," as you might have in past
fundraisers. You might consider "Pennies for Peace," or
"Penny Drive." The
coordination efforts can be done by individual RAs, an entire
staff, or a hall government or hall council.

Who
should write the check?
When you have collected the money, you will need to deposit it
into an account. This could be a hall government account, a
personal account, or a special account you create at the bank. A
check is then drawn from whatever account you choose. As long as
all of the money donated is deposited, you can use whichever
method you choose.

is the address to send the check to?

Why
send it to ResidentAssistant.com first? Won't that delay the aid
in getting where it needs to go?
The
collaboration of residence halls all over the nation simply
provides the opportunity for more money to be raised. I've worked
with the American Red Cross on this project, and they are excited
about the potential of this united effort. As checks are received,
they will be recorded and sent immediately to the American Red
Cross, so the delay in is not a significant factor. As previously
mentioned, the American Red Cross is excited about this effort,
and they are aware of all logistical issues.

When
does the check need to arrive?
Again, any money at any time will facilitate the
efforts of the Red Cross. For the purposes of the contest itself,
all checks need to be received by October 12, 2001. All checks
received after that time will still be send to the American Red
Cross, but will not be included in the contest.

Who
is participating in this effort?
The response from this initiative has been wonderful. A few of the
schools which have halls participating are: Florida
State University, University
of South Carolina, Millikin
University, Clarion
University of PA, Indiana
University, Hiram
College, University
of Colorado at Boulder

I'd
prefer to look at other ways to contribute.
Where can I look?
There are MANY ways to contribute. They include arranging blood
drives (check with your local blood bank first), looking at other
funds to contribute to, such as: the 9/11 fund through the United
Way, The Salvation Army, The NY Firefighter's Memorial Fund, and
many others. Just work find a way to make a difference in this
critical time.
