Scheduling Hints

As you work to become more effective in managing your time, here are some scheduling hints:

Plan Regularly

Set a weekly and daily time to look ahead and plan. You may choose to start every week by making a to-do list on Sunday evening. You may also want to end or start each day with 5 - 10 minute of time to plan and reflect.

Review, Assess, and Reprioritize!

  • Look at what you have to do. Is it Quadrant I, Quadrant II, etc?

  • Reprioritize based on your planning. "Prioritization is the Procrastination Panacea! (Cure-all)"

  • Carry your planner... look at it often!

Schedule down time!

  • This is a "Rock" or a Quadrant II activity. If you aren't staying balanced, you will not be effective.

Make a Separate To-Do List

  • Write down your tasks and use your list to prioritize and keep track of what you need to do.

Be Flexible!

  • You won't always be able to plan ahead for everything, just as "Joe" and "Jane" found out. If you are prepared, you will be ready adapt to change and crisis!

Plan for Balance

  • Include friends, family, fitness, recreation, social, and spiritual activities in your planning. (These are "rocks", or Quadrant II activities)

Block off time for Major Activities

  • If you have time blocked off for something like studying (a Rock), you can tell people, "sorry, I have an appointment." Honor those "appointments!"

Do something!

Worksheet activity:

  • Make a note of some scheduling hints you want to implement within the next week. (Activity 8)
