Setting Goals

Your Vision/WHY Statement gives you a framework upon which YOU CAN NOW SET GOALS! To understand the importance of doing this, consider the following illustration:

In the 1950's a study was done at a major university, in which members of the graduating class were asked if they had a vision and goals written down on paper for what they wanted to accomplish in life.

Only 3% of the students surveyed said yes.

In a follow-up study 20 years later, those 3% reported being happier, living better quality lives, being in better relationships, etc. That may all sound very subjective, but pay attention to this. Those people in that 3% group were worth more monetarily than the other 97% combined! While money is certainly not only measurement of success, it is significant to look at in this case. Having a vision and goals that are written down is powerful.

It is very important that you write your goals down. A goal that is not written down is nothing more than a wish!

Your goals should be:

  • Related to your vision
  • Challenging
  • Realistic
  • Measurable (how will you know when you've reached this goal?)

5 categories of goal setting:

  • Personal
  • Family
  • School/Career
  • Financial
  • Lifestyle

Do Something:

1. On the goals section of your worksheet, fill in the 5 categories of goal setting.
