Racism, Sexism, &
Homophobia as Explored by Dave Chappelle (Word )
Description: Students (and some faculty members)
watch the Dave Chappelle Show (regularly shown on
Comedy Central) and discuss the implications/issues
addressed in the show (like female vs. male sexuality,
reparations for slavery in America, the hip-hop scene,
use of racial terms, affirmative action, etc.). Of
course, have food/drinks available to encourage residents
to come.
Instructions: If you need to reserve rooms/equipment,
do so ASAP!
Obtain a copy of the Dave Chappelle Show, and preview
it to come up with some starting questions.
Post fliers/advertize your event. PLEASE remind residents
that his show is somewhat graphic and may spark "sensitive
buttons" in residents. Remember to send invites
to faculty who might be able to contribute to the
discussion as well.
If you choose to have food available, allow time
for you to buy the food and allow residents during
the event time to get to it.
Set up your space, pop the video in and let the discussion/viewing
begin!
Other Considerations: Consider other comedians,
like Margaret Cho or Chris Rock. Consider whether
or not to host this event in a lobby (where residents
might just drop by) or in a auditorium (where larger
screens are available).
