Residence Life According To
A Dorm is simply a form you see,
Where people sleep at night.
A Residence Hall is a place of learning
Where residents gain insight.
I Am The RA, I Speak for the Trees,
And in building community I have expertise.
Each year I strive to have residents understand,
That respecting each other is the promised land.
Building that community is difficult to do,
Trust and teamwork are the first issues.
"I meant what I said, and I said what I meant.
An elephant's faithful, one hundred percent."
Horton knew the importance of confidentiality,
On anything from classes to roommate problems or human sexuality.
While confidentiality is an important part of continued employment,
This does not mean your life must be without enjoyment.
And while it is understood that RA's are student too,
The same standards do not apply to you.
A role model is what you must be both day and night,
So avoid intoxication on campus and do not get in a fight.
You must be on your best behavior at all times,
If not, when on duty all you will hear is whines.
"Why is it ok for you but not for me?" they will ask,
And keeping order in the halls will be a daunting task.
"I know up on the top you are seeing great sights, but down at the bottom we, too, should have rights. "
We can learn from the turtles that everyone wants to be equal,
So favoring residents is just alienating people.
So I try to find out something new about each one, ask questions and listen carefully it's a job that's never done.
Seuss teaches us that when there's more than one fish in a school,
Every size, shape and color are valued and a tool.
Sneetches are a good example of diversity,
Which is an important lesson in every university.
If you do not know the story I will spell it out,
Some had stars while others went without.
Technology enabled the Sneetches to change their status,
Through the use of a mechanical apparatus.
Then neither plain nor the
star-bellies knew,
Whether this one was that one or that one was this one.
Or which one was what one or what one was who.
They learned to look past physical features,
And saw that they were all beautiful creatures.
If you think the story is a little after-school special you're probably right,
However not all residents are as bright.
So let's move on to a new subject altogether,
Programs can be done in all types of weather.
The trick is to make each program unique,
An opportunity to learn something new and a chance to speak.
Creativity in programs and advertisements is a must,
Without it you will surely go bust.
For the budget you are given is a little tight,
So stretch and pull and innovate with all your might.
"Think left and think right and think low and think high,
Imagine the things you can think up if you only try."
"I do not like green eggs and ham I do not like them sam I am."
Sometimes residents resist the nourishment you provide,
It may be new and unfamiliar or an issue of pride.
Do not get discouraged they will eat when they're ready,
You should keep your ground, give opportunity but stay steady.
Being a show off is no way to lead,
The job is not for those who experience greed,
It does not pay in quite the way you would expect,
If money is what you seek you are incorrect.
The rewards for me are that people you meet,
They are even better than the ones found on Mulberry St.
Residence life is surely a balancing act,
But the rewards are plentiful and that's a fact.
As an RA you will have many duties its true,
For the college, the residents and yourself you must come through
Just remember to
"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
You'll be on your way up!
You'll be seeing great sights!
You'll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights."
