Spider Web

Name:    Ryan F.
School:  Syracuse University email:   [email removed]

Description:

This is kind of the opposite of an ice breaker.  It is the perfect "ice-freezer" to close out a year and help residents lock up some of their memories.  Have all of your residents sit on the floor in a circle.  Give one person a ball of yarn and tell them to wrap some the yarn around their hand.  They then should choose a person in the circle who has had an impact on their life in some way during the year, explain to the group what that impact was, and then throw them the ball of yarn.  The person who now has the yarn does the same thing.  This continues until the yarn runs out, or everyone has had enough.  Once you're done, there will be a big spider web in the room!  Explain then how even though everyone may not have been friends or gotten along, the entire floor has been connected in some way to each other during the year.

Instructions/Things Needed:

A large ball of yarn, a pair (or two) of scissors

Other Considerations:

As the program progresses, repeatedly remind the group to make sure everyone in the circle gets the yarn at least once, so nobody feels left out.  (It would be really awful for that person if this happened)  And once you're done, pass around the scissors and offer residents to cut a piece of the yarn to keep as a souvenir.
