How to Survive the Holidays Away From Home
- Halloween may be over, but pumpkins are on SALE! Buy big ones and paint or just throw a few little ones here and there.
- Put up old photos of your family holidays.
- Take the time to write letters to your loved ones and send them. REAL letters, not email?.you can even add an artistic touch.
- Try scents in your room (like plug ins or sachets)?.good ones are pine and cinnamon?very holiday-ish.
- Spend some time planning what you're going to buy for presents and shop!
- Spend even more time getting into the spirit by wrapping the presents in creative (and cheap) ways?.this will make them really personal.
- Make paper snowflakes for your room.
- Consider buying or making a small Christmas tree for your room (if you celebrate Christmas).
- If you don't celebrate Christmas, consider getting another symbol of your celebration?.don't have a celebration?.you could make one up!
- Draw pictures and put them all over your room (fall leaves, turkeys, Christmas stuff, presents?.etc.)
- Think about doing cards or small gifts (like candy) to give away to your new friends?.sitting down to make the list of who gets presents will make you realize just how many friends you've made this year!
- Save up some change or cash and give it to a needy organization?doing this will make you feel great?even if it's just a little bit!
- No money? Consider taking a few minutes to brighten someone else's day with your time or your smile. There are many people in nursing homes and hospitals that are away from home for the holidays just like you?.they would love to chat with you for even just a few minutes!
- Buy a disposable camera and take photos of all your friends getting into the holidays?. or just being goofy. (Ok, I'm not really sure how this is holiday-ish, but it sounds like a good time)
- Keep track of your thankful thoughts in a journal!
